Haitian Revolution
For this week’s discussion, I chose to look into the video verses the reading. One of the topics that I chose to talk about the was the battle of the selling of sugar between Cuba and Haiti. The Haitian revolution took place during 1794-1804. The influence behind the revolt the enslaved people who were stolen from their home country and brought over to man these sugar plantations. The plan and result was to overthrow the French Regime in Haiti, that was responsible for the enslavement of hundreds of thousands of slaves- doubling the amount that were in the United States. During the revolt, there was a shortage of sugar- seeing as the main source of labor fell apart whilst the revolt was in place. As a result, Cuba saw a prime opportunity to excel in the market leading them to be the lead producers of sugar in this time. You can see from this information how quintessential slave labor was to the profit of slave owners and their plantations, not in the buying and selling but as a means to produce their resources- so you can see how much a loss was taken by the slave owners when the sole people they relied on to make them money, turned around and began to fight for their independence. Evidence in the video displayed that the whites were truly afraid of the power that African Americans were gaining, especially when a person of color was ima place of power.
Hi Ketsia.
Great choice this week. I fell in love with the Haitian Revolution and all its efforts to liberate his people! Many people are afraid of that revolution and never want to see it again. We were in unity and reading the same script and was successful. We must organize again and be on the same page in order to progress to the next level. I will be very excited when the class begins to talk about Haiti. We have power in our tanks, and we need to use the vehicle and organize, organize, organize!
